AT WAIPUKURAU

GOVERNMENT CRITICISED. ' Per Press Association. J WAIPUKURAU, Nov. 12. Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, Leader of the Democrat Party, addressed a large Central Hawke’s Bay audience of over 700 electors, the Mayor of Waipukurau presiding. He was accorded a goc-d reception and a vote of thanks and confidence. Mr. Hislop traversed the essential features of the Democrat policy, and specially critiicsed recent legislation departing from the principles of Grey. Ballance, beddon, Ward, and Massey in favour of National Socialism. He said that the Government had failed •>n the tests of taxation and employment. Direct taxation had increased bv £8,000,000 since 1932, and the last Budget aggregated £25,000,000, while six weeks back 10,000 more men depending on unemployment taxes for work and a like number were on the dole alone than at any period in the past three years. Of the £9,000,000 mentioned by Si r Alfred Ransom as the benefit of th© higher exchange lees that’ half became clear profit, so Mr. Hislop strongly condemned this system of relief. advocating a bonus as a statesmanlike alternative. He also emphasised his opposition to the sales tax, and drew attention to the allegation against the Democrats of touting for votes, ami contrariwise pointed to the departmental xotes totalling £600,000, made available for this election instead of the contingently providing £200,000 as per the Budget. The estimated Budget surplus for 1934-35 of £BOOO was found to be £1,600,000, indicating bad estimatj ing. as the Minister knew he was ! going to make a profit of £1,250,000 . >.r. the gold taken from the banks*. Mr. Hislop declared that the De . mocrat Party was going to put the ! Government out of office, but would not put Labour in. saying that the Democrat Party would be the Government. As to questions, the candidate would be prepared to answer points regarding his policy.
