UPOKONGARO FERRY

WAITOTARA COUNTY’S ATTITUDE. LEFT FOR MINISTER TO DECIDE. Tiie Waitotara County Council’s attitude towards the re-establishment of the Upokongaro terry was cleardy defined at yesterday’s meeting when a resolution leaving the matter in the hands of the Minister of Public Works to decide what should be done, was placed on record. Cr. R. Earley, supported by Crs. R. Laird, A. Richardson and A. Win wood, moved that the Waitotara county recommend to the Minister that the ferry be opened. This motion, however, was defeated and the one which stated that the matter be left in the hands of the Minister, was carried. The discussion followed the receipt of a letter advising that the Wanganui county, at its last meeting, had decided to take no further action in the matter and to leave the question for the Minister to decide. The Chairman (Mr. Wm. Morrison): We cannot do anything on our own. Cr. Win wood: For the sake of fur own ratepayers we .should do something. The Chairman: We cannot compel the Wanganui county to act. Cr. Winwood; I consider it a wrong attitude to deprive the ratepayers of something they have been using for 60 years. Cr. R. Farley moved that the Waitotara county send a recommendation to the Minister of Public Works to the effect that the ferry be continued. The Chairman: We should leave the whole thing for the Minister to decide. Cr. T. Alexander: T think it should be made clear that the question should be purely a riding one, and that the whok’ county should not be asked to contribute. Cr. .T. Cameron: We should apply to the Minister and make our position •dear to him Wp should give our rca sons why we are not continuing will) the fer;y. I move in that direction. On going to the vote it was decided tn support Cr, Cameron’s motion that the matter be left to the Minister f< r fi nalit y.
