HIT-AND-RUN MOTORIST

ABETTING THE OFFENCE PASSENGER FINED £2O [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON. Sept. 27. Roy Hamilton Dellow was charged to-day with aiding and abetting a motorist in failing to stop after an accident. The case wal the sequel to a prosecution against Patrick Thomas Syron, which was dealt with some time ago, in connection with the death of Norman Anderson, who was struck by a car driven by Syron on the night of May 6, when driving from Lambton Quay into Willis Street. Dellow was one of the passengers, and Syron bad alleged that when the accident occurred Dellow said: “You hit a man. Drive for your life.” Syron said that he was dominated by what accused told him.

In fining Dellow £2O the magistrate (Mr. Mosley) said: ‘‘lt was one of the most callous acts a man can possibly perpetrate. I can’t use language sufficiently strong to express my views on your action. All I can say is that it was extremely callous and reprehen sive. There is only one punishment for a man like you, who knowingly leaves a man on the side of the road after he has been knocked down by a motor-car, and knowingly encourages the driver to leave him without any assistance. I don’t know what sort of a man you are. I think there must be very little manhood in you.” It was mentioned that Dellow had lost his position, and was now struggling to sell goods on commission. He was a married man with children.
