WORK FOR THE WEEK

THE FLOWER GARDEN. Sow Larkspurs, Godetias, Clarkia. Eschscholtzia in the open ground. Thin out seedlings as soon as large enough. Make a sowing of Matthiola bicornis, the evening-scented Stock—the sweetest flower in the garden of a summer’s evening. Do not cover seeds too deeply and well prepare soil before sowing. Lift, divide and replant Delphiniums, Perennial Phlox and Micnaelmas Daisies. Finish planting and pruning Roses. Already the buds are far advanced. Plant such tender shrubs as Bougainvilleas, Poinsettias, Biguonia venusta, Solarnum Wendlandii. Bamboos are best planted this month. As hedge or ornamental plants they are very nice. Sweet Peas can be sown. Those already planted must have attention to cultivation, disbudding and tying. Gladioli planting can be continued. Pests, including slugs, are numerous enough without providing tree lodging for them. THE VEGETABLE GARDEN. Fork or spade over weedy ground between standing crops. Lift the remnants of root crops left in the ground. Prepare the ground, for another crop. Lift any Artichokes left in. A planting can be made now. Allow a foot between sets and three feet between rows. Plant autumn-sown Onions. Prepare the ground for sowing the spring crop of Onions. Cultivate between Onions, Shallots and other early planted crops. Prepare ground for planting Potatoes. The sets should be sprouted before planting. Sow Peas according to requirements. Early sowings should be moulded up and sticks placed to them. Sow Brussels Sprouts and Broccoli, Leeks, Savoy and late Cabbage. Parsnips should be sown at once. Sowings of Lettuce, Radish, Carrots, Turnips, Beet should be made to suit requirements. Watch for slugs. Clear away all hiding or breeding places and dust growing crops with some slugicide. Clear away the remains of any spent crops. Lift and bum Cabbage stumps; do not bury them. THE FRUIT GARDEN. Finish any pruning that remains. Any late planting should also be finished. This is a good time for planting Citrus fruits. Spray Peaches and Nectarines for leaf curl as the bud scales burst Head back trees for grafting over. Make new plantings of Rhubarb.
