LAWN TENNIS. ANNUAL MEETING. Another successful past, season was reported on at the annual meeting of the Patca Lawn Tennis Club last. Thursday night, Air. T. .17. Roberts pre siding over a large attendance of members, while apologies wore received from Alosdajncs Roberts, Taylor, Aliss Glenny, Messrs. Whitehead and Jones and Rev. H. B. Burnett. New members elected for the new season were Alisses N. Clark, N. Carey, and Alessrs. A. Clark, R. Hill and LEdwards. Resignations were received from Alisses E. Hamerton and W. Hurley, and Mr. R.. Adams. Submission of the annual report and balance-sheet showed a. sound position and a. hopeful outlook for a successful 1935-36 season. The annual report read as follows: —Weather conditions wore ideal for playing purposes, although lack of enthusiasm was shown for the latter part of the season, due no doubt to the unusually hot summer. Our membership of 55 last season was very satisfactory; 38 of those players were ladies, the men again being very much in the minority. There was a record attendance on opening day, when a Yankee tournament was greatly enjoyed by a full attendance of members and many visitors. The handicap singles for the Custodian’s Cup were keenly contested, Airs. Baker proving the winner after some very close games. The club’s thanks arc due to the thoughtfulness of the donor, Air. Lamb, for his generous gift for this purpose. Tho intermediate matches with Waverley for The challenge cup presented by the presidents of the two clubs again proved very, interesting, our team winning by two matches to one. Although the balance-sheet shows a slight decrease in the balance as compared with that of thp previous season, it is interesting to note that many improvements have, been effected during the year. The club is greatly indebted to Air. and Airs. Whitehead, who have spared no efforts in improving the lawns and surroundings. The Zip heater purchased early in the season has been of great service, and was well appreciated by the ladies. Expenditure during the past year was almost wholly on the lawns. A great deal of wotk was done on them during the winter months and your committee has taken great pains in selecting the methods adopted to improve the growth of fine grass and the playing surface. The pavilion, though old, and the surroundings have a better appearance than for many years. The thanks of members are due to the ladies for their splendid arrangement of refreshments during the season. Speaking to the report and balancesheet, Air. Roberts said that members could feel quite gratified at the financial and playing position of the club. A great deal of work had been put into the courts and pavilion last season and would entail practically nothing outside care of the lawns being

spent this season. Although the past year had commenced with a credit balance of £8 cxld and concluded with a credit of 6s 4d only, there was n great many improvements to show for the expenditure, while there were several subscriptions outstanding. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, spoke c-f the valuable time and energy spent in the interests of the duh. particularly by Mr. and Airs. E. C. Whitehead. Air. Taylor, in seconding the motion, said he considered that, although last season had been a particularly trying one as far as the condition of the lawns was concerned, this season would see them much improved.

Following tho discussion on the report, tho question of opening day was discussed, and finally left, in the hands of the committee. Subscriptions were fixed at the same rate as past year, with the addition of honorary members’ subscriptions of five shillings. Mrs. Baker, with Misses Gibbings and Roberts were appointed to inquire into the advisability of holding a ball, to report hark to the general -committee as soon as possible, as the hall would have to bo held before Labour Day. Election of officers resulted as follows: —President. Air. T. F. Roberts; vice-presidents. ATesdames Baker and Whitehead, Alvssrs. Tavlor and Prescott; committee, Aliss Gibbings, Alessrs IT. Sheild, T. Burgess, S. Cousins and Whitehead; club captain. Airs. Baker; hon. secretary. Aliss V. Sheild; hon. auditor. Air. W. AT. Alilliken; ladies’ committee. Alisses R. Harris. Nelson, Westwood.
