* A RETURN VISIT
When Air. Lloyd Powell, the distinguished Welsh pianist, was examining in Wanganui for the Royal Schools of Music in July last, he gave a lec-ture-recital at very short notice in the Girls’ College Hall. Those fortunate enough to bo present only needed to hear a few bars of Mr. Powell’s first item to know that they wore in tho presence of a very great artist. He will be conducting examinations in Palmerston North at the end of next week and has kindly consented to come over to Wanganui, on Saturday, October 5, when those people who were prevented by the short notice from being present before and the many others who are anxious to hear Mr. Powell again, will have an opportunity of listening to him at the Girls’ College Hall. After winning an open scholarship to the Royal College of Music, the Haywood Lonsdale Scholarship, the Hopkinson Gold Medal for pianoforte playing and the Dannrouther prize for the best performance for a pianoforte concerto, Mr. Powell was awarded a grant from the Patrons’ Fund to . study abroad, and went first to Berlin and then to Basle, where he joined Busoni’s Master Class. He has given concerts in Paris and Berlin and has played with the leading orchestras in London and the provinces. He was appointed a professor of the pianoforte at the Koval College of Music in 1919. One of'his pupils, Air. Isador Goodman, toured New Zealand recently.
