A special highly supercharged and extremely powerful engine is being developed, designed to maintain the power mH put at levels of 50,000 ft. and more, and drive an airscrew of variable pitch. The designers now have a great deal of information about conditions Io bo met in flight at great heights, as Bristol engines have been lilted to each of the three aeroplanes which have set up height records in recent vears. The present record of 47,35'ift., held by Renata Donati, an Italian aviator, was established in a biplane equipped with supercharged BristolL’agastls not) horsepower motors.
