WRESTLING

HOPKINS v. ANDRESEN AT OPERA HOUSE TO-NIGHT | • I SPECIAL AMATEUR BOUTS Some fast and attractive wrestling should be seen at the Opera House to night, when two of the clever est wrestlers ever to visit New Zea land will be seen in action. The matched pair are Ole Andresen, of Nebraska and George Hopkins, of England. Some, idea of the capabilities of Andresen should be gi\cn by his contest with Earl McCready at Christchurch, Andresen held the clever Canadian to a draw. The Christchurch Press said it. was difficult to understand why AnJrescn did not receive a straight out points decision. With McCready, as with others, he apparently baffled his opponent by the clever manner in which he used his legs both as a means c-f offence and defence. Hopkins should prove no mean opponent for Andresen, as in their first and only meeting the latter only succeeded in gaining the verdict by one fall to nil. As his mme indicates, Andresen is of Swedish descent, though born in I he United States of America. His record as a wrestler is a truly impressive one, as he has to his credit drawn decisions with such wrestlers as Ed “Strangler” Lewis, Joo Stecher, John Pesek, and Jim Browning, who later defeated him in a world’s title bout. He has straight-out decisions over Hans Steinke, the strongest American wrestler of to-day, Hal Rmnberg, and Dr. Fred Meyer, and is one of the very few men to have defeated Chief Little Wolf, who is now generally credited with being the runner-up for the world’s heavy-weight title. Andresen has escaped from the Wolf’s deadly “Indian Death Grip,” being one of the very few men who have done so. The foregoing is sure an impressive record for a man of only 30 years of age. George Hopkins, as a drawcard has so far this season m the Dominion proved equally as good and in some cities, Christchurch for example, better than Earl McCready. Local patrons will have the opportunity of witnessing the return clash between this pair of mat-

men and all things considered thi evening’s contest should prove one of the most interesting ever staged under ’ the auspices of tlxi local association. ' Special Amateur Bouts. ) Tonight’s amateur bouts will take the form of a teams match between I amateurs from Wellington and Wangai nui. Some interesting contests are pre- ■ dieted for some of the best amateurs • in the country will be engaged. The

.star bout will be between H. Godfrey (12.7) of Wellington and Harry Bartlett (12.3) Wanganui. Godfrey has a good record behind him, one of his most important wins being the New Zealand light-heavy title. The deeds of Bartlett are well known locally, and the bout should be one of the tit-bits of the evening. Other matches are: T. Spalding (10.8) v. C. Matson (10.8), R. Minnis (10.0) v. L. Vare (10.0), and L. Nolan (9.0) v. E. Rholoff (9.0).
