ON HAWERA TRACKS

TARANAKI PREPARATIONS. YESTERDAY ’S GALLOPS. (Special to “Chronicle.”) HAWERA, Au g. 27. Hawera candidates for the combined hunt meeting were given their semifinal gallops this morning. The outside of the course proper was again used with the legs in the middle of the track. The going was again heavy and slow. St. Clara (Cook) and Carfex (Hawke) were associated over live furlongs, the latter being half a length to the good at the close in 1.30. Carfex hit out freely and had to be held back to his companion over the final stages. St. Clara was not impressive and appears to be still rather backward. She may start on the second day at. New Plymouth where she is engaged in the open sprint. She will be ridden by H. Cook. Notium (Cole), Arouse (Flower) and Gay Patrick (Feasey) were sent out of the barrier in company all. leaving the mark in good style. They went on Io complete three furlongs in -llsec. with Notium showing to advantage. This two-year-old son of Lysandcr and Makepeace looks a picture at present and his progress will bo followed with more than ordinary interest. Ruaform (Sheild) covered six furlongs unaccompanied in 1.30 l-ssec. Ho worked rather lazily especially over the early stages. Bantry (Chote) and the Chief Ruler —Just Ho filly (O’Connell) were sent out of the barrier at the seven furlong peg. Leaving the mark smartly the Just 4So filly was a length and a-half ahead of her companion after two furlongs had been left behind in 28 2-ssee., when she was pulled up. Bantry continued alone to register 584 sec. for half a-mile. Bantry should do better on the day for he is rather

sluggish, in his work. The Just So filly shaped most pleasingly. She is iniproving steadily and promises to make her presence felt in .the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui. Friesland (Grindlay) accompanied Brilliancy (Monkley) in a sprint down the straight. The two-year-old again hit out attractively. Later this pair were sent out of the barrier, both leaving the mark iu good style. Friesland’s manners have improved considerably and he is not nearly as troublesome as formerly. Careful (Conway) and Ingenuity (Sheild) sprinted two furlongs down the back, the latter being slightly iu front at the finish in 27 2-ssec. Ingenuity is coming to hand rapidly so should be in good nick for Wanganui. The two year-olds Ned Cuttle (Sheild) and Galteemore (Feasey) were sprinted down the straight with Ned Cuttie showing to advantage at the post. Both sliaped attractively Ned Cuttie is a bay colt by Captain Bunsby from Merry Twinkle, owned by Air. J. Somerton, of New Plymouth, and trained by J. Fryer. He is the more forward of the pair and should be on hand for spring racing. Galteemore (Martaina —Lady Colossus) is also a member of J. Fryer’s team, but is beinggiven plenty of time and is not likely to race early. The majority of J. Fryer’s team were galloped before the interval as the Hawera trainer had to leave for Wellington this morning with Stanchion, who sails for Australia to-mor-row. Further riding engagements announced are:— B. H. Morris. —Lowenberg. W. E. pine.—Fersen. K. Chote.—Bantiy. A maidei* which may be capable of upsetting calculations in the Wereroa Scurry on Thursday is Kia Ora, a 1 hree year-old filly by A'aals from a full sister to the dam of Toniierre. She is a member uf T. 11. Fryer's string and has done most of her trials ia private, but is reported to possess speed above average. .lust Oft’ has been showing slight signs of lameness during the past few days. However, the trouble is not considered serious so he will most likely fulfil his New Plymouth engagements.
