ON HAWERA TRACKS

HUNT PREPARATIONS. Y ESTERDA Y S OPERAT IO XS. (Special to “ Chronicle.'' i HA AV ER A, Aug. 26. Although Monday is usually an “oil"’ morning there was a far amount of galloping at Hawera this morning as many of the local horses are rather short of work. The majority of these will thus be able to have their final work-outs cn Wednesday for the combined hunt meeting. _ All galloping this morning was done on the course proper, which was slightly faster than on Saturday, but nevertheless still very heavy. The poles were in about the centre of the track. I The Colossus —Just So filly (O'Connell) sprinted two furlongs down the back stretch in 28 3-ssee. She hopped oft slowly but. gathered pace smartly and was bowling along in great style over the concluding stages. Cargen (Hawke) was going better than Bantry (Chote) at the elo.se of the three furlongs in 41Isec. Carfex worked in his usual bold manner and is in great form for New Plymouth. Ban try improved on his effort of Saturday m inning. Stanchion (Howe) left five furlongs behind in 1.14 l-ssoc. He is in fine fettle for his Australian trip. Arouse (Monkley) had Gay Patrick (Howe) as a companion over tAvo furlongs down the back stretch in 27 2-5 sec. Gay Patrick then pulled up but Arouse went on to occupy 41.1 ssec. for three furlongs. It was easily the best effort credited to Arouse of late, for he has been galloping rather disappointingly during the past fortnight. Gay Patrick is improving steadily. Lowenberg (Monkley) worked impressively to be helf a length in front of Fersen (Grylls) over half a mile in oosec. It was a useful effort on the part of Lowenberg for he was going fairly comfortably in *the final stages. The big son of Lord Quex and Zarene should make his presence felt in forthcoming engagements ami is not without prospects in the Wanganui Guineas. Fersen went much better than on Saturday. Brilliancy (Monkley) was given a start over two furlongs by Friesland (Grindley), but the latter found his feet smartest and Brilliancy did, well to fin ish on terms with the older horse in sec. Brilliancy is shaping attractively, giving every indication of coming to hand rapidly. The hunters Panloff (Grindley) and Just Off (Conway) gave an excellent display over four steeplechase fences. Panloff jumped slightly the faster but Just Off took each fence in a very even manner. Considering that both were having their first schooling IcS’ son over country it was a good exhibi tion and they should race well in their engagements at New Plymouth. After being on the easy list since returning from Riccarton, Golden Mair rejoined the active brigade this morning when she was allotted light exercise on the sand.
