Mr. R. Carruthers, formerly of Wanganui and now of Woodville, was a week-end visitor tu the city. Mr. G. H. Mackley, General Alanager, New Zealand Railways, was a visitor to Wanganui on Saturday night. Air. Mackley attended the annual reunion of the New Zealand Railway Officers’ Institute (Wanganui branch). Messrs. L. G. Lukey and J. G. Schofield, who arc on their way from Auckland to Wellington, are due to arrive in Wanganui this afternoon and will be the guests of Mr. ('. Falkner, of the New Rutland Hotel, during their stay. Franklin Browne and those anticipating listening-in to his singing in the operatic aria from Wellington to-night, will be disappointed to know that he has had to cancel his engagement owing to throat trouble. Wellington visitors to- Wanganui for the iutor-collegiate tournament include Messrs. W. and 11. Pijier. D. I. Al. Anderson. Trevor Lane, 'l', and G. Barty, John .Terrain, T. A’u-ung, L. Speedy, E. Dawson, John Phillips, Tony Roberts, R. White. C. Levin, and N. Avery. Messrs. A. W. Wclstead, commercial manager, N.Z.R., C. Blackburn, secretary to the General Manager, N.Z.R., and E. W. Barnes, president, N.Z. Railway Officers’ Institute, were Wt. .igtou visitors to Wanganui on Saturday. They attended the reunion in the evening.' The funeral of Llorien Olga Smith took place at Alount View Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, and was attended by a large number c-f residents in the Rata district, including a number of members of the Marton Harrie Club. ’The Rev. D. Mclvor conducted an impressive service at the graveside. Information has been received that the authorities at St. John's Gate, London, have endorsed the appointment of Mr. Hope Gibbons, as the district resident of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. The Chief Commissioner. Col. Barclay, has also approved of the appointment of Air. R. L. Thompson a> vice-president for cadet purposes and the promotion of Mr. R. A. Wall from divisional superintendent to district officer for the New Plymouth area. Mr. .1. M. Richardson, who has been president of the Wanganui Referees’ Association for the past two or three seasons, was presented with an Evershap pencil by his colleagues at the annual reunion on Saturday night. Mr. N. Reid, who made the presentation, said that it was accompanied by the expressions of appreciation of Air Richardson’s service to the game of Rugby, both as au active referee and as an administrator. Mr. Richardson, in his reply, said that the gift took him entirely by surprise. All he had done had been entirely for a love of the game. He had had thirteen years’ experience as au active referee, and had served on the appointment board for a number of seasons. Last season had been the best of all so far as that body was concerned. Mr. D. McElwain, who is now on his way to London, to absorb the benefit a scholarship won by his own outstanding ability will afford him, was the subject of a toast at the annual reunion of the Wanganui Referees’ Association on Saturday night. His father, Mr. W. R. McElwain, is a member uf the Wanganui Referees’ Association, and represents that body on the Alanagement Committee of the Metropolitan Rughy Union. Mr. H. Hague Smith said that the occasion should not pass without some recognition of the pride, the Wanganui referees had in the fact that it was a son of one of their number who had so distinguished himself and brought honour to Wanganui. Mr. McElwain. iT<his reply, took the opportunity of publicly thanking all who had offered assistance ami expressions of goodwill to Mrs. AfcElwain and himself, especially those connected with secondary schools who had come forward with offers of personal help.
