Mr. J. A. F. Cundy has arrived to take up the position of chief clerk at the District Engineer’s office of the Railway Department, Wanganui. Mr. Tom Gray, of Wellington, formerly of Wanganui, has been appointed adjudicator of the Auckland Provincial Band Contest to be held for B, C. and D grade bands on November 23. Mr. F. M. B. Fisher, who was Minister of Customs in the Reform Alinistry from 1912 to 1915, and who has been resident in England for many years, is now in Australia, and intends shortly to revisit New Zealand. Canon C. V. Pilcher, professor of Old , Testament literature at Wyckliffe Col- ' lego, Torotno, who has been visiting Australia, arrived at Wellington on Monday, and left Auckland by the Niagara on Thursday morning for Vancover. Viscount BlcJisloe. formerly Gover-nor-General of New Zealand, and Sir Clutha Mackenzie, director of tho New Zealand Institute for the Blind, were elected life members of the Auckland Institute and Museum, at a meeting of tho council on Wednesday. Dr. A. V. Walkom, of Sydney, who is honorary general secretary of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science, is expected to arrive at Auckland on September 3 to assist in making arrangements for the conference of the association to be held here in January, .1937. The death has occurred of Mr. J. B. Arm it. aged 90. He arrived in New Zealand in 1875 and for a time was engaged in journalism. His name was well known among the provincial journals, more particularly with tho old New Zealand Times. Subsequently he went to Australia. Upon returning to New Zealand some years later, he entered the Lands and Survey Department. (Press Association, Wellington). Air. A. A. Watson, of Sydney, Grand Sire of lhe Grand Lodge of Australasia, 1.0.0. F., arrived at Auckland on Wednesday by the Alarama from Sydney, via Wellington, and Jatvr joined tihe Niagara on his way to attend tho Sovereign. Grand Lodge session to be hold in Atlantic City, United States, in September. While in Auckland Air. Watson was the guest of the Grand Master of New Zealand, Air. A. J. Guy. In the annual debate and oratory contest between St. Patrick’s College (Silverstream) and St. Bede's College (Christchurch), hold at Silvcrstream, Wellington, on Wednesday, Master J. Doolaus, of Wanganui, was placed first in oratory. Ho was complimented by the judge, Mr. J. N. Milward, headmaster of the Hutt Valley High School, on his effortless and clear enunciation and his line dramatic talent, which combined to make his speech on Lawrence of Arabia most interesting. St. Patrick’s also won the debating section. Master Doolan is the son of Mr. and Airs. IDoolan of Gonville.
