AN OFFENDER FINED. [ Pm* rr«u AuftHalloa J AUCKLAND, Aug. 2T The first prosecution under Section 23 of the Sales Tax Act was brought before the Magistrate’s Court today. Under this section, i£ any sum is due or payable by the payer of sales tax, the Comptroller of Customs may, by written notice, require any by whom the money is owing to the taxpayer to pay it to the Comptroller. The minimum penalty of £l2 Ids was imposed, the department stating that the case was brought chiefly as a warning to the public.
