VALUE OF RUGBY

football has long found an honoured place in. the type of outdoor recreation fostered by the secondary schools of the Dominion. It is a game which appeals strongly to those entrusted with the teaching of the young, because it encourages team ■work. That is no mere platitude. It is definitely true. On the Rugby field and on the cricket field, too, man can find nil fundamentals upon which he can safely entrust life itself—team work, leadership, confidence in one another, and an ability to accept victory or defeat with becoming grace. To advocate that a team should not seek victory would be wrong. There must be lhe will to win, plus the desire to win in the right way, or to taste defeat like sportsmen. To-day’s inter-college Rugby tournament at YVanganui, because it supports those principles which retain Rugby as part of the life of a secondary school, will make wide appeal.
