WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

RANGIWAEA AUGUST MEETING. The usual monthly meeting was held in the Rangiwaea Hall on Thursday, August 15, Airs. Speedy presiding over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the singing of the institute song, * ‘Comrades and Friends,” and the aspirations. Airs. Speedy then welcomed visitors—Mesdames Dellow and Transom, of L’tiku, and Miss Al. Belk, of Ohotu. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the financial report presented. Aliss M. G. Cann then presented her report of the Dominion Conference, recently held in Auckland. The demonstrator for the afternoon was Miss M. Belk, who gave a very interesting demonstration of organdie petal work, and on Aliss H. Bell’s motion, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded her. The agernoon had also taken the form of a gift afternoon for Mrs. S. Beard (nee Aliss Betty Spooner), our first institute bride. Mrs. Speedy, on presenting Mrs. Beard with a posy,

wished her every happiness in her future life. Airs. Beard then opened the many parcels and briefly returned thanks to members tor their gifts. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Airs. Garmonsway, seru., and | Afrs. S. Livingstone. During the social half-hour a pianoforte duet was given by Misses A. and K. Bayne, members then taking part in a game of “musical arms,” and also in folk dancing. Results of the competition were as follows: —Best article out of two skeins of wool:—Senior: Mrs. W. Garmonsway Airs. D. Bell 2, Afrs. Donovan 3. Junior: Miss Goodall 1, Afiss A. Bayne 2, Afiss Hagan 3. The competition for September is an article not costing more than sixpence —for seniors and juniors. The singing of the National Anthem brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close. FORDELL W.I. CONCERT AND DANCE. A most successful concert and dance was held on Saturday last by the Fordell Women’s Institute. In spite of the very inclement weather the Public Hall was filled. The evening opened with the National Anthem, after which the audience was delighted with two pianoforte solos by tho brilliant pianist, Aliss Cornish. Mr. Jack Howie, the popular Fordell tenor, gave two songs, his rendering of both being particularly fine. An amusing debate followed, the subject being, “Do Women Work Haider Than Men?” Tho debaters were:—For the affirmative, Airs. Dale, Aliss Hall and Airs. Anderson; for the negative, Mr. Bruce, Air. Dale and Air. Mcßeth. The ladies won the vote. This was followed by two vocal items by Mrs. I’errctt, who sang charmingly. A one-act play, “The New Poor,” was presented by the Fordell Drama Circle. Those taking part were Airs. Lloyd, Aliss Howie, Aliss Wilkinson, Miss Dickinson, and Air. D. O’Leary. The play was well acted and highly amusing throughout. Air. Howie contributed two further songs, which met with the usual hearty applause. The second play by the Wanganui Pliers, was entitled “Suppressed Desires.” The players were Miss Roscoe, Aliss Robinson, and Air. Gordon, whose interpretation of a very clever play was most skilful and very entertaining. The concert concluded with two songs by Mrs. Perreit which were greatly appreciated. Airs. Bruce, the president, in a short speech, thanked all who assisted with the programme and commended the audience for braving the elements. Supper was then served, and dancing until midnight brough a very happy evening to a close.
