POLICE AND PRESS

GALA CONCERT PLANS. AUCTION OF BALL FUND. Arrangements are being made by the Wanganui Police and Press Committee to promote a gala concert programme in connection with the drawing of the alluvial gold art union. Efforts are being made to secure the best possible talent to ensure a first-class programme. The date set down for drawing the art union is Thursday next, August 29, but if the programme the committee is seeking is not possible of presentation on that date, application will be made to the Minister of Internal Affairs to permit the drawing to be postponed one week, or perhaps less. Two wellknown New Zealand artists who were approached in the matter will not be free on Thursday next, but there is a possibility that they will be available later. They are being communicated with.afresh with that object in view. Owing to the very unfavourable weather conditions ruling on the day of the match, the takings this year will fall a great deal as compared with those of 1934. Donations to Ball Fund. The following donations have been made to the Rugby ball fund promoted by the committee by means of an auction conducted by Messrs. Sharpe,

1 be ball has been purchased by the Licenced Victuallers’*Association and will be presented to the club winning the knock-out competition which is to be inaugurated to-day by the Metropolitan Rugby I nion.
