BARRIE’S SCOTTISH TEAM
CHALLENGE TO THE WORLD When the 1931 Australian cricketers were in England they found, as in 1926 and 1930, that Sir James Barrio was as deeply interested in bat and ball as he had been as a little Scottish youngster in a back lane of the home village. sir James entertained the team at a dinner. • “This,” said AV. A. Oldfield, the other night, while entertaining a big bunch of young cricketers with stories of the tour, “was a great honour and pleasure. Among those wo mingled with at the dinner besides Sir James wore E. V. Lucas, tho essayist and the poet of cricket; Tom Webster, tho famous Daily Mail cartoonist; and Nevill Cardms, who paints cricket pictures in prose. It was a delightful dinner, with wit flowing as well as other things." Sir James Barrie, in 1926, at a big London luncheon to the Australians, challenged the world on behalf of Scotland, and proceeded to name his team, something like this: Macartney, McDonald, Mcllobbs, McGrimraett, McOldficld, McAndrews, McGregory, McHendrcn, and so on. He rolled the names of his champions out in the drollest manner amid roars of laughter. Sir James is one of the world’s best lovers of cricket.
