; DOMINION BREWERY WAGES STATEMENT BY MB. KELLIHER By a decision of the directors o Dominion Breweries, the wages of al employees of Waitemata Breweries wil ho restored to the old 1929 level. Las' October the company restored the B per cent, cut to employees earning uj to £6 a week. The latest decision a.f facts everyone, irrespective of wage; The managing director, Mr. H. ,T Kelliher, explained that he and his directors were convinced of the fal lacy of the general policy of reducing wages as initiated by the Government and followed by private enterprise throughout New “ Zealand. He attributed the tremendous drop in the spending power of the people, as well as the loss of confidence and general decline in business, in a very great measure to this mistaken policy. “Nothing is more convincing than actual facts,” he added, “and the best proof as to the fallacy of reducing wages or the wisdom of restoring cuts may be found within our own company. The reaction experienced by Dominion Breweries almost immediately after announcing the restoration of wages last October was beyond all expectation. Sales showed an increase of 40 per cent, within a short period, and this increase has been more than maintained ever since.” Mr. Kelliher concluded by saying that he was particularly pleased that the Auckland City Council and Harbour Board saw fit to restore normal wages. Men earning up to £0 a week constituted approximately 80 per cent, of all wage-earners, and he hoped that in the not distant future the former wages would be paid to this class of workers as a matter of course. As far as Dominion Breweries were concerned, the directors had felt no hesitation in restoring wages, irrespective of amount.
