CAR PLUNGES INTO RIVER
ELDERLY MAN DROWNED. FIVE OTHERS ESCAPE. ( Per Preaa Annociatioa | WELLINGTON, Aug. A drowning fatality occurred at Waircre bridge, between Piopio-and Aria, last evening, wlren a fivc-seater sedan car, containing six people, plunged into the upper Monau River, and an elderly man, Mr. Alexander Gurdon Clark, aged 60, farm manager, was drowned. The tar was on its way to a dance at Aria and the live other occupants were all young men. They al] went under the water with the car, but managed to .scramble clear. They must have had an extremely narrow escape, for, with the heavy rain, there was 20 feet of water in the river. It is believed Clark is still in the car.
