Mr. Justice Johnston and Mrs. Johnston ai*e guests at the Rutland Hotel. Air. (I. A. Lee, consulting engineer, has been appointed by the Nelson Harbour Board to prepare a comprehensive report on Nelson Harbour. Professor J. Shelley, professor of education at Canterbury College, is the adjudicator at the British Drama League festival at Palmerston North this week. Mr. Noy Reid, formerly of Auckland, has been transferred from the New Zealand Government Tourist Office at Melbourne t-o the New Zeaiand High Commissioner’s office in London. Mr. H. J. Guthrie, of Dunedin, who returned by the Niagara on Monday after attending the International Rotary Convention in Mexico ’City, left Auckland for the south on Monday evening.

Mr. IL AL Firth, who was recently appointed New Zealaml Trade and Tourist Commissioner at* Los Angeles, left Auckland by the Niagara on Wednesdayday on his way to take up his new post. He was accompanied by Airs. Firth.

Air. "W. AL Willis, of Wellington, has been admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supremo Court of New Zealand by His Honour, Air. Justice Blair, on the motion of Air. J. S. Hanna. Air. Willis is a son of Air. A’. B. Willis, of Wanganui.

Dr. Wilton Henley, son of Air. and Airs. W. E. Henley, of Napier, and a former Rhodes scholar, has been appointed house physician to the medical unit at St. Alary’s Hospital. Paddington, London. He obtained his degree in medicine in England last month.

Air. J. AV. Butcher, Government Statistician, left by the Niagara on Wednesday to attend the Empire Statisticians’ Conference at Ottawa. Dr. R. Wilson, an economist attached to the Australian Federal Treasury, also left for the conference by the Niagara.

Sir Herbert Alatthews, of London, a leading English agriculturist, arrived from Vancouver by the Niagara on Monday on a holiday visit to New Zealand. Sir Herbert, who visited the Dominion last year, will spend between two and three months in New Zealand before returning to England.

Mr. Frederick Page, of Christchurch, whose work in musical competition has won high praise in England, has k’ff for England, where he will continue his studies, probably under Dr. Vaughan Williams. He has been made special grants by the University of New Zealand and Canterbury College.

Airs. J. Siddells, after 21 years’ excellent service in the cause of education, did not seek re-eiection on the committee of the Intermediate School this year. Her retirement was the subject of a motion of regret at the meeting of the Wanganui Education Board on Wednesday. The chairman (Air. E. F. Hemingway) said that Airs. Siddells and her husband had done wonderful work and Mrs. Siddells would be greatly missed from her usual sphere. The board carried a motion of appreciation.

Mr. H. C. Gronn, who for the past 45 years, has been associated with school committees in Alarton, is relinquishing the position of criairman of the Alarton Junction committee and giving up membership. At Wednesday’s meeting of the AVanganui Education Board, eulogistic references were made by the chairman (Air. E. F. Hemingway), Air. A., 8. Coleman and Air. R. Dukeson, to Air. Gronifr’s devotion to school work, and his invaluable ability to hold his committee together in a spirit of goodfellowship. Regret was expressed that ill-health is preventing him from continuing the good work, and in placing a minute of appreciation of his services on the books, the board expressed the hope that he would rapidly recover.
