DEMOCRAT PARTY

CONFERENCE CONTINUES INTEREST ATTACHING TO LEADERSHIP FORMULATION OF POLICY [ Per Press Association. J WELLINGTON, A ug. 22. Morning, afternoon and evening meetings were held to-day Dy candidates and prospective candidates of the* Democrat Party at present in conference in Wellington. At the tea adjournment it was hoped to finish the conference to-night, but as the evening advanced it was realised that »t would be necessary to resume to-morrow morning. The indications now arc tha 4 the conference will not eoncldJe unti. to-morrow afternoon. No announcement was made for publication when the conference adjourned to-night, but it is possible that an official statement will. be issued at the conclusion of th-a proceedings. Chief interest attaches to the leadership of the party. Names mentioned in this connection include the Mayor of Wellington, Mr T. C. A. Hislop, presiding over the conference; Dr. G. J.Adams, of Wanganui, deputy-chairman of the conference, and Mr J. B. Donald, of Auckland. Air Donald returned to Auckland to-night due to the illness of his wife.

The fact that Sir Alexander Herdman was not present to-day, appears to rule him out ns a possible leader. All to-day sub-committees appointed by the conference the previous day were working on questions of detail relating to the policy with which the DemoGrat Party proposes to go to the country, and to-night delegates sat as a general conference to discuss their reports. This discussion will be continued to-morrow.

The proceedings were attended by 56 delegates—three more than the number present, on the opening day.
