DEFENCE NOTES

(By “Sentry.”) Members of B company are reminded that if they wish tv attend the course next Sunday. August 25, at Turakina, they must hand in their names without delay to either, C.S.M. Davidson, or Sargeant Koorey, as transport arrangements are now' being made for those wishing to go. Those men who have | signified their intention of parading are reminded that they must be nt the Drill Hall next Sunday morning not lator than JO a.m. Dress will be uniform with full web and rifle. Lunch to be taken and tea will be supplied. For the first time this year it was found necessary to cancel the half-day parade owing to the wot weather that prevailed last Saturday. However, the shoot will be held now on Saturday week, August 31 v when it is to bo hoped that members will roll up in force and make up for lost time. A Company. Lant Monday evening as a diversion from the usual parade routine an instructional film was shown in the officers’ club room to members of A com pany. The film dealt in detail with the mechanism of the Vickers gun while at a later hour, a further film was shown to Officers, and N.C.O-s. dealing with the more advanced stares of machine gunnery. An explanation of the points to be awarded for the Privates’ trophy competition, was given by the Company Commander before dismissal. Briefly the awarding of points will be as follows:—Attend ance 50 marks; turnout 5 points to best dressed man on parade, total 50 marks; progress 5 points each parade on which even tests are hold, possible 50 marks; musketry, according to results at classification, possible 50 marks, making a total possible of 200 marks. A half-day parade will be held for A (s) Company on the Putiki range next; Saturday at 1.30 p.m. Turakina Platoon. Work with the platoon is proceeding apace and territorials of the district are still register ring a good percentage for attendance at. parades. Next. Sat urday and Sunday, August 25 ami 26, h short course will be held on the Turakina Riffe range. The Trench Mortar sections will make their initial appearance in field vork with this regiment and some interesting demonstrations should bn seen. The Wanganui platoons of B Company will bo co-operating on the Sunday when the additional imnrbers will help ro build

the sections required up to full strength. A boxing class which is held every Monday evening in the hall is proving very popular and the enthusiasts are endeavouring to secure the services of a well known and popular Wanganui boxing instructor, which will enable them to learn more fully the mysteries of the fistic art. It is hoped by means of a dance to raise a small sum which together with a levy on every member per class will defray the instructors’ expenses. 4 * Best of luck Turakina and not too many black eves.” Martan Platoon. The above unit of the regiment ha« been forging ahead of late and a short time ago a week-end course, which was well attended, was held on the platoon commanders’ property at Heaton Park. Approximately forty men attended the course, and several were successful in qualifying for their machine gunners’ badges. Fino weather prevailed for the course, and the camp short as it was, proved very enjoyable to all those who attended. A good muster has been recorded for evening parades of Into and the percentage of attendances has been showing a marked increase. Regimental Badminton Club A very enjoyable match was played on Wednesday, August 7, by the above club against a team from the Imlay Club. 'This time Imlay were the winners by 9 sets to 7. On August 15 the Savage Club held an inter dub match with Regimental the results being a win for the latter by 15 sets to eight. As the season is now draw ing to a close members are urged to attend and play any handicaps or championships that remain to be played, thus a>si ting the committee to finalise matters in these com-pet it ions.
