WINTER WOOL SALE

INTEREST IN WELLINGTON ACTIVE COMPETITION FOR CRUTCHINGS. ( Per Press Association ) WELLINGTON, Aug. 20. Considerable interest centred to-day on the winter wool sale held by the Wellington Wool Brokers’ Association. The offering was unusually largo, totalling 4873 bales, comprising 2996 bales of crutching and 1877 bales of fleece wool. There was a large, and for the time of the year fairly representative bench of buyers. Competition, especially for crutchings, was very active, and a number of buyers filled some fairly large orders. Crossbred crutch ing brought the highest, prices, the best making from 7d to 7jd. Halfbred and Merino crutchings wore not greatly sought after and many lots were passed in, bidding for these sorts being somewhat erratic. In view of the improvement in the wool market during the last few months, it had been expected that there would be a good sale for fleece wools. Bidding, however, was not particularly keen, and in many cases it was plain that growers’ ideas of values were well in excess of buyers’ limits, with the result that there were many passings. Best Merino fleece wools, of which there was only a small offering, made lOd to 12Jd. Half bred brought 9{d to 11 jd. In crossbreds, average 46 to 48’s made 8d to Bsd, 44 to 46’s 7sd to Bd, and 40 to 4-I’s 6RI to 7jd. The range of prices was as follows: Merino crutchings, sjd to 6£d; crossbred crutchings, sup., to 7£d; crutchings, seedy and inferior, 3Jd to s|d; locks and stained pieces, 2d to Merino, average lOd to 12j|d; medium halfbred, average, 92d to lOd; extra fine crossbred, average, BJd to 9id, super BJd to 10|d, inferior 6£d; low crossbred, average, 6|d to 6sd; lambs, 50 to 56’s, to fine, 44 to 50’s, 7d to 9jd, seedy and inferior 4d to 7d; halfbred crutchrings, 4Jd to 7d; crossbred crutchings, medium-good, sjd to 7sd; crossbred pieces and bellies, 3jd to 6£d; fine halfbred, average, Did to Hid; fine crossbred average, 7£d to Bid. inferior 7|d; medium crossbred, average, 6id to BJd; coarse crossbred, average, 6jd to 7Jd; hoggets, 48 to 50’s, 9|d to 10jd, fine, 46 to 48’s, 7|d to BJd; bellies, and pieces, halfbred, low to medium, 6d, crossbred, good to super, s{d to 6id, low to medium 2d to 3d. Agents’ Reports. The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report: At the Wellington crutching sale the total catalogue was 4873 bales—lB77 bales of fleece wool and 2996 bales of crutchings and oddments. This was an unusually large offering for a winter crutching sale, and attracted a full bench of buyers. Competition for crutchings was exceptionally keen, especially for coarse lots, but finer halfbread crutchings were not so eagerly competed for and prices were rather disappointing. While orders for fleece wool seemed to be in the market, limits were lower than expected, with the result that a large proportion of the fleece offering was passed. Top price for crutchings, 7Ad per lb., other good lots 6Jd to 7d. Levin and Co. report: The winter wool sale was held to-day. The total offering was 4873 bales made up of 2996 bales of crutchings and 1877 bales of fleece. Uur offering was 1050 bales. There was a good attendance of buyers. The greater proportion of the offering consisted of crutchings. Crossbred crutchings realised the highest prices, the best selling at from 7d to 7id. On the other hand, halfbred and Merino crutchings did not quite fit consumers’ requirements and were carrying heavy condition. The prices bid were, therefore, comparatively disappointing. Bidding came from all quarters, particularly from Japan. The bulk of the crossbred fleece offered was only of average quality, and growers’ anticipations on many of the larger lots were not realised. We quote: Merino fleece oddments lOd to 12Jd, half bred fleece oddments 9|d to 11 Id, crossbred fleece, average quality, 46-48, 8d to 84d, crossbred fleece, average quality, 44-46, 7{d to Bd, crossbred fleece, average quality, 40-44, 6sd to 7}d, crutchings, Merino, 5Jd to 6Jd, crutchings, halfbred, 4 : |d to crutchings, crossbred, good to super, 7d to crutchings, crossbred medium, 6d to 7d, crutchings, crossbred, inferior and seedy, 4ld to 6{d.
