WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

SILVERHOPE MEETING. On Wednesday, August 14. Mrs. Beatlie presided over a large gathering of the Silverhope Women’s Institute. The meeting having opened in the usual manner, the president, in a few wellchosen words, welcomed the executive commit tee, visitors and members. The minutes of the last meeting wore followed by correspondence, which included a statement of accounts re the sale of basketware for the Blind In stitute, and the “bring and buy” for the Cancer Fund, which was held in conjunction with' the Hunterville AV omen’s Division and Insitutos in the surrounding district. Mrs. Beattie then introduced the federation president, who introduced the secretary, Mrs. Ginnane; treasurer, Mrs. Farley; and throe members from Wanganui, Mesdames Rush, Lynch and Seddon. After a. brief talk on the work of the Women’s Institute, Mrs. Brine gave a resume on the Dominion Conference. Mrs. Farley spoke on the rest cottage, urging members to make use of it. The three members of the executive committee wore presented with shoulder sprays as a token of thanks for their visit. Mrs. Lynch gave a short talk on needle work and illustrated it with some of her own magnificent work. Mrs. Rush then gave a very interest ing demonstration on the making of papier macho dolls’ heads. After afternoon tea Mrs. Farley demonstrated the art. of making willow baskets, large and small. The throe demonstrators received a very hearty vote of thanks from all present. No competition was held, but an exhibition of handcrafts was staged, bringing forth many excellent pieces of work. The most outstanding were a set of hand-knitted baby garments, a homespun ami woven skirt length with a homespun and knitted jumper to match, and several oil and water paint ings The singing o ? the National Anthem brought a most instructive meeting to a close. The competition for September will be the best dressed fid doll, to become the property nf the W.l. The roll call will be a spring-cleaning hint, and the demonstration folk-danc-ing by Mrs. Churchill and party. Mosston. The Mosston Women's Institute met in the Tay forth Church Hall on August 6, Mrs. Lynch presiding. Hems by the Aramoho Glee Singers, recitation by Mrs. Buller and community singing were enjoyed. Mrs. Rowan gave a demonstration on “Silk Cushions” The. competitions were as follows: Marmalade: Mrs. Slilborn I, Miss Kinkead 2, Airs. Atkinson 3. Nut loaf: Mrs. Stilborn I, Mrs. Heeling 2, Mrs. Denman 3. The judges were Mesdames Rowan ami Green. The best knitted singlet, was won by Mrs. McFarland, and Mrs. Russ second and Mrs. .Stewart third. They were, given to Sister Lee for distribution to the needy. Mrs. Stilborn 1, Mrs. Shaw 2, and Mrs. Den man 3 were the winners of the wheat meal scone competition. A donation of 10s was forwarded to the Men’s Shelter. The hostesses were Mesdames Smith, Denman and Siddall. TURAKINA. Over thirty members and friends met in St. Andrew’s Hall 'in Thursday, when Mrs Wisch nowsky presided. The meeting opened with the Ode. Several letters were considered, aftci which Mrs. R. .1.
