SERIOUS CHARGE

MAN AND WOMAN REMANDED ( Ter Press Association. ) AUCKLAND, Aug. 6. A detective to-day arrested Phy Ilia Shorter, aged 31. a domestic, and she appeared later at the Police Court with George Frederick Hewer, aged 49, medical practitioner, who has been in custody under remand. They were jointly charged that on July 23 they unlawfully used an instrument or other means on a female for a certain purpose. Both were remanded to August 13. The question of bail was raised by counsel, who said that Hewer had been in custody a fortnight pending a report about, thc young woman concerned. He understood that the girl was out of danger, if there had been danger. Hewer was a married man with four children. Shorter was married, with five children, aged between live and ten years. The police objected to bail for Hewer, saying that the woman was still in hospital, though out of danger. The magistrate said that if she was out of danger there was no reason whybail should be denied. There did not scenic to bo any suggestion that the course of justice was likely' to be impeded. lie fixed bail at £5OO, with twu sureties of £250 each.
