"VELOS"

’l’he Wanganui Amateur Road Cycling Club conducted a 30-mile contest last Saturday, the course being up to Ppokongaro and back, then out No. 1 Line to the Warrengate, returning to finish at the boundary line at Putiki. The race resulted in a good win for J. McCormivk, with 11. Hodson second ami Anderson and Wade (scratch) close behind, fighting a great sprint for third place and fastest time. Fifteen riders lined up at the start, but the loose metal on the River Road made the going very hard and a few retirements resulted before the good going was reached. ith eight miles to go, a good bunch ol live led by J 1:1. 45scc. from the scratch bunch, but over th e last five miles the scratch men gradually wore down all the others with the exception of two who were working manfully to hold their own. At the Airport Road it. looked all up for them, but like a bolt from the blue,” a foolish motorist, in trying to pass the back men right on this bad bend, nearly •caused a serious accident. A motor-car approached from town and they all but mot head on, a mishap being avoided by the cyclists swerving down the Airport Road. It was a close shave and spoiled whatever chance the scratch men had of winning.

John McCormick (3.15) rode a good hard race and deserved his win, which is his second this scaeson. Those wlo remember this rider last season would hardly credit the wonderful improvement he has shown. He is now in the lead for points for the Adamson Cup and will take some heading.

H. Hodson (3.15) teamed well with the winner, this being the keynote to their success. Hodson hits been riding most consistently this season and this month should find hjm well to the fore in the tough races.

Los Anderson (scratch) was a real toiler on Saturday and thoroughly deserved his third and fastest. But for the “close shave’’ at the Airport Koad he must hav 0 been a “good thing” for first. He is very fit and takes a power of beating.

J. H. Wade was another hard worker in the 30-mile contest, but seemed to lack his old finishing sprint. As he hag only been riding in the last three events he should improve with further races.

Glon Sullivan rode well. When he was caught by the scratch mon, ho teamed well with them and gave some very useful laps.

Next Saturday’s race will be over the Turakina-and-ba«ck course for the Garthofn Cup, which is jointly held by Les Anderson and Loveridge. It will be interesting to see who will be the successful rider this year. This cup is well worth winning and the best that is in all the boys will be brought out in the struggle for supremacy.
