STREET BATTLE
POLICE SHOOT BANDIT INCIDENT IN NEW YORK Received Aug. 4, 5.5 p.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 2. A police sergeant and two patrolmen engaged a single bandit in a 20-ininute revolver battle at a crowded lower east side street corner to-day. The bandit finally was killed and the driver of the taxicab he was in slightly injured. By a miracle, none of the hundreds of bystanders was hit.
The bandit, with two companions, robbed a store of about 100 dollars. The three separated. One, later identified as Remo Liberi, a paroled convict, hailed a cab, but before he could escape he was halted by the police. Using the tonneau of the cab as a shield, Liberi started firing at the police, who put 28 bullets through the tonneau. The bandit finally stood upright, fired the last shot from his weapon, and fell dead. The driver’s neck was Scratched, apparently by one of the bandit’s bullets.
