V.A.T.C. AT CAULFIELD SIXTEEN ANNAS SCORES Received Aug. 4, 7.5 p.m. MELBOURNE, Aug. 4. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club's meeting was held yesterday at Caulfield. He won in dashing style by eight lengths, with Laniroi six lengths away, third. Tim 6.84. Dress Huit, Kiawana and Sir Bailos fell but the last-named rose and continued in the race. Her de Lance broke down. Metro finished second in the Malakoff Stakes, which was won by Feldspar. Chcmars was third in the Monndah Plate and Quarto unplaced. Mcnibo was unplaced in the Wilgah Steeplechasers' Flat Raco. “J. want to congratulate members on the most successful year,” said the president. “There is no doubt that racing is on the improve and the present season must be regarded as one of the most succesful the club has experienced in recent years. A w r ell-known New Zealand owner-trainer, now in Australia, has recently figured in the cables as stating that racing in the Dominion is | in a most deplorable state owing to the absence of bookmakers, but in my opinion that is utter rot. New Zealand has got along quite well without, bookmakers for the past 25 years and I claim that it will be able to continue without them for the next 25 years and not be affected. What we want is a reduction in the crushing burden of taxation, to gether with the introduction of the telegraphing of money to the racecourse and the double totalisator. It is hard to understand the attitude of the Government in this direction, for it would derive considerable benefit in revenue these reforms. Taxation is definitely too high, as is shown by the fact that this season over £257,000 was paid by the racing club;—of which our own club 1 | contributed £422B—which exceeded by no less than £2.3,000 the amount offered in stake money by the clubs. ' The election of officers resulted: I'r esident, Mr. S. <Tonks; vice-president, Mr. W. O. Williams; honorary treasurer, ' Mr. 8. Adamson; committee. Dr. \V. T. ’ Simmons. Messrs. A. Appleyard. 11. G. ‘ Dickie, M.P.. B. C. Gibson. A. Good, .1. 1 Gray, .1. F. Kiley. W. MeL’Dowie, G. 11. ! Ryan, F. W. Sutton, T. A. Winks. New members elected were: Messrs. \V. Bourke. T. 11. Gray, G. W Hollis, R. Mortlock, F. Parsons, J. B. Rowe, Sheahan ami R. Ur?. ' The auditor’s report showed that the external liabilities are almost £BOO less • than in 19.34. It must give gratification L to members to see a reduction of £751 ■ Is 5d in the club’s indebtedness Io the ' bank after the difficult experiences of recent financial periods. Other liabilii tics are substantially the same as at the send of the last financial year.
