Strike Menace
I PACIFIC COAST SHIPPING VITAL CONFERENCE OPENS (By Telegraph—Prose Association—Copyright) Received Aug. 4, 6.55 p.m. WASHINGTON, Aug. 3. The conference of Pacific Coast shipping representatives met to-day but the union leaders from San Francisco refused to agree to allow ships anchored there and at Vancouver to be unloaded. It is reported that they are delaying commitments pending the arrival of Mr. Bridges, who is now described ns the ‘Teal ruler” of the maritime unions on the Pacific coast.
Labour Department officials indicate that they believe that, whether another
major strike is called in September depends on th-e present conference, and they do not discount the importance of Mr. Bridges in the negotiations.
UNEMPLOYED MUSICIANS
GREAT AMERICAN RELIEF PLAN Received Aug. 4, 9.5 p.m. WASHINGTON, Aug. 2. A project described as the most elaborate State art programme ever undertaken by any Government will soon be launched as part of the Federal re-employment drive, financed with funds from a. giant works relief bill. It is estimated that 18,000 unemployed musicians in America will be classified according to type and artistic expression, and from them symphony orchestras, dance bands, chamber orchestras and choral groups will be formed to give free concerts and entertainments to every section of America. Unemployed composers will likewise be helped by having relief oi'chestras play such of their compositions as ordinary commercial organisations are not willing to accept.
