Airs. G. D. Dunlop and Miss Nancy Dunlop, of Christchurch, are visiting Wanganui. Dr. and Mrs. 'l’. W. Dawson were Christchurch visitors to Wanganui at I he week-end. Mrs. I?, ('ooper. Wellington, was a recent visitor to Wanganui. Mrs. I’isher. Wanganui, is visiting Mrs. W. Farquarson, at Stratford. Mrs. A. G. Harvey. Waverley, left at the week-end to spend a holiday in New Plymouth a s the guest of Airs. 'J' U. List. Miss Marjorie Dimock has returned to Wanganui from Auckland, where she was the guest of Mrs. IDimock. Canon and Mrs. Mortimer Jones, who have been visiting Wanganui, went on to Wellington lief ore returning to Hastings. Mrs. S. A. Thompson, of North Auckland, spent a few days with friends in Wanganui on her way to Wellington. Mrs. George Glen hostessed a party last week for Dr. Helen Topham, who leaves shortly for England. Miss J. L. Flower, Marton, has taken charge, for the present, of the Northcote Hospital at Palmerston North. Mr. and xMrs. John Roache and their two sons, John and David, have returned to Wanganui after spending a holiday with their grandparents, Mr. and Airs. Ashworth, Tinakori Road. Miss Leita Gibb Brown, who has been nursing in Australia for tse past few months, left Melbourne last week b the Orsova on a visit to England and the Continent. Dr. Neige Todhuntcr and Miss Edna Moorhouse, who have been spending a few weeks in New Zealand, joined the Alakura at Wellington for Sydney en route to San Francisco. The wedding of Miss Marion Macfarlane, Auckland, well known in tennis circles, will take place shortly at Suva. Her sister, Aliss Marjorie Macfarlane, deft Auckland last week to attend the wedding. Canada’s best-known editor, Mr. John W. Dafoe, of the Manitoba Free Press, recently in his capacity o’ Chancellor of the University of Manitoba, conferred the honorary degree of Doctor Laws on Miss Cora Hind, dean of North American newspaper women, whom in defiance of precedent, he appointed agricultural editor of his paper in 1894. She still holds the position, at the age of 74, after having established a reputation as one of the world's most a'ble crop estimators.

Mr. J. Beck. Director of the Child Welfare. Department, addressing members of the Women’s Service Guild, Wellington, recently said it was a curious fact that in times of financial stress the numbers of children brought under the care of the department were considerably less than in prosperous times—a thing which might emse a great deal of serious though! on the part of those who have to do with young children. The average number of illegitimate children born each year was 1200, and the department was able to arrange approximately 400 adoptions, so that all did not come on the >?tate for upbringing.
