THIEF CAUGHT IN ACT A VIGILANT HOUSEHOLDER. | Per Press Association. J CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 3. Caught red-handed and held up at the point of a shotgun at midnight, a thief was captured by a Papanui householder in the act of making off with live sacks of potatoes. This morning the thief. ‘William Thomas Crocker, a butcher, aged 44 years, was sentenced to 18 months’ reformative detention for theft.
The police said that owing to previous thefts the owner of the potatoes watched a shed, trying to intercept < rocker. The owner was greeted with a shower of clods of earth but, being armed with a shotgun, he challenged Grocker. who gave himself up.
