TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIP

STRATFORD VIRTUAL WINNER LAST SATURDAYS GAMES Once again the Taranaki senior Rugby club championship games were commenced after a fortnight’s spell owing to a representative match on the intervening Saturday. Last Saturday’s games were played in gloriously line weather, tempered by a stiff westerly breeze. Interest in club games has waned considerably over the last few weeks, due to intervention of rep. games and also to Stratford’s unassailable lead in the championship. following are the results of Saturday's games:— Okaiawa .17 v. I’atea 8. •Star 9 v. Waimate 6. Clifton 2-1 v. N.P. Old Bovs 8. Kaponga .11 v. United 8. Opunake 3 v. liawera 0. •Stratford .15 v. Inglewood 3. Tukapa won by default from Athletic. Several close even games were reported during Saturday's games, particularly that between Opunake and Hawera at Hawera. These two teams were fighting for third place on the championship ladder, with only a point separating them. Opunake proved the winners solely by virtue of a penalty goal, neither line being crossed during the whole of the game, although it looked likely that Hawera would score in the last ten minutes of the game. Inglewood was another team which went down to Stratford, while Clifton accounted easily for New Plymouth Old Boys. Tukdjia won from Athletic by default, but played a friendly game with Eltham, who had the bye, and defeated that team 29 to 13. Star and Waimate at New Plymouth and United Old Boys and Kaponga at Stratford, were both very even games with low scoring. Patea 8 v. Okaiawa 17. 'the standard of play "given by Patea and Okaiawa in their match at Okaiawa was below their usual exposition of the code, and the game was not ’ particularly exciting at any time. JSun ‘ and wind were botii important factors in the run of play, Patea in the first ’ spell playing with advantage, but in > the second naving to play against a ■ sinking sun and a strong breeze. Ter- ‘ ritorial advantage was gained by J Patea in the first spell, keeping Okaiawa hard on the defence most of the time, and Okaiawa only occasional!v broke through. The second spell saw this run of play reversed, and Okaiawa . were attacking. Half-time scores of ; Patea 8, Okaiawa 0, are a fair iudica- • tion of the run of play up to that time. , Okaiawa, with better defence work in . the backs, were the better team, with Murdoch, the Toro brothers and Skipper playing well. For Patea, D. Hunt, Bourke, Wills, Baldwin and Richards were the best. Edwards had a day off. while Row’.ands, who was back after an absence due to injury, was evidently not back to his usual form. Gudgeon was absent owing to an injury received in the rep. game of the pre- \ ions Saturday. Following were the teams:— t Patea: L). Hunt, Rowlands, Edwards, ! Henare, P. Bourke, C. Hunt, Zimmer- ■ man, McTaggart, Woodford, Couch, t Crawford, Baldwin, Richards, Wills, J Huston. ♦ Okaiawa; P. Toro, T. Toro, C. Blair, < A. Guy, Murdoch, T Robinson, Hickev, • Skipper, Preston, Wallace, E. Guv’ r Thomas, Wallace, Henare, Awahou. r Air. 8. K. Hunt refereed. 1 Junior Match. a In a match at Patea, the Patea and ( Hawera A junior teams tried conclu- 'I sions as to who should be South Tara- t naki champions, both beink equai in I points. It was a hard game from start •' to finish, with the forwards combining well in hard rucking play which gave 1 the backs little opportunity. Hawera ' were unlucky not to score as this team ' had territorial advani'.ige practically throughout both spells, but Palea’s defence was tuo sound for them. At. one 1 time Patea fought hard for ten min- ' utes while Okaiawa forwards pressed ’ hard in tight play right on the line. ( There was no score in the game, which F ended in a draw. The result of the .South Taranaki junior championship, therefore, still hangs in the balance, the result of next Saturday’s matches c having greater interest. The home fifteen started well to gain a lead of 8 points but Buller evened to make the half-time seore Sall. In the second spell the Buller hookers dominated play, the backs see ing plenty of the ball to make the score 21 —8. In the final stages North Otago rallied, scoring just before time to reduce the margin to 21—13. For the visitors tries were scored by Holder, Strachan (2), and J.
