LABOUR SHORTAGE
UNEMPLOYED MUST WORK UINTED STATES WHEAT BELT DOLE PAYMENTS STOPPED [By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright J Received July 21, 6.45 p.m. DESAIOINES (Iowa), July 20. To meet the labour shortage in the wheat fields, with the harvest season reaching its height, relief headquarters in 16 counties have stopped dole payments to force the unemployed to accept work. The prevailing pay is two dollars a day with “keep,” and planters are complaining bitterly that most of the normal labour supply is now on relief, and the majority refuse to accept work at, comparable rates. The State Governors throughout the wheat belt arc preparing to take drastic action to force the unemployed to accept work, unless the Federal Government intervenes.
