FAMOUS MADAME HANAU | DEATH IN FRENCH GAOL | (By telegraph— Press Association Copyright) j PARIS, July .19. Following an attempt to commit, suicide. Madame Hanau, who was involved in the infamous “Gazette du France.” scandal in .1930, as a result of which thousands of people were ruined, died hi the infirmary at Fresncs Gaol, at the age <>.f fifty years, after serving successive terms of imprisonment. She had occupied a carpeted and book-bned cell like a lawyer’s office at Santo Prison, whence a lady’s maid bluffing two warders, assisted her to escape through a window by means of knotted blankets. Later she gave herself up and the Governor dismissed the warders and place Aladame Hanau in the former cell of Mata Hari, the famous spy of the Great War. Though hunger strikes and a motor accident impaired her health, she founded, two financial papers while on bail, 'j’he last sentence was of three years’ imprisonment imposed in 1931. Her divorced husband and ex partner Bloch, died last year.
