To-morrow a whistle run will run will be held, and members are requested to assemble at 2.15 p.m. sharp as Ihe run will take considerably longer than the usual 6{ miles race. Th(> main event of the season—the N.Z. crosscountry championship is to bp decided in Wellington to-morrow. Ihc- course which is a two lap course starts ami finishes at Lyall Bay and is over a distance uf 6.’ miles. Special interest is centred on this race as a team is to be picked to visit Australia next month and excellent racing should be witnessed. Bavidan is considered a favourite in the individual section with Pullar, of Otago, a good scconil, while, in the teams section Otago, the present holders of the title, will be hard to beat. One or two teams arrived in Wellington yesterday and the remainder a?e expected to-day. The West Cojsl team, with the two local runners. F. Hill and .Don Smith left for Wellington this morning. Both are good runners and it will be very interesting to see how they compare with New Zealand’s best. Arrangements have been made with the team manager, D. SECONDARY PUPILS’ BALLAlthough there were numerous winter attraction in the district on Thursday evening, There was a good attendance at the Empire Hall on the occasion of the secondary pupils of the Afarton District High School’s annual ball. The hall had a, picturesque appearance with the gaily-coloured streamers that adorned the hall. One of the most pleasing features of the ball was the excellent music rendered by Gus Large’s orchestra, which appealed to the dancers, who were insistent in their demands for results. During the supper interval extras were played by Air. Frank Wood and Mr. Gus Large. The Monte Carlo was won by Air. Eric Thompson and Aliss F. Simpon and the spot waltz by Mr. W. Twigg and Aliss O. Williams, A. dainty supper was dispensed under the auspices of the Ladies' Welfare League. Mr. A. Gracie made an efficient M.C. THE CIVIC THEATRE. “VAxNEBBA; HER LOVE BTORY.” Helen Hayes and Robert Aloutgomery are co-starred in “Vanessa: Her Love Story,’’ the outstanding feature which opens this afternoon and evening at the Civic Theatre. “Vanessa: Her Love Story,” is a picturisation of Hugh Walpole’s novel, “Vanessa,” which was the fourth and last of his group of books dealing with the spectacular Hurries clan of the rugged Cumberland district of England. The story concerns Vanessa, the heroine, and her troubled Iqv o affair with Beniie Herries. the “wild one” of the clan. On the eve of their wedding they are separated by a misumlerstaml ing. When Vanessa relents and finds Benjie it is too late; he has married another woman. Vanessa allows herself to bo talked into marriage with Ellis Berries, a dour but respectable member of the family. Ellis is insanely suspicious and makes her life miserable. Years later she meets Benjie and they manage to ste.al a few weeks of happiness, but eventually Vanessa goes back to her husband. PERSONAL. Mr. John Openshaw and Air. Aubom* Fullerton Smith, who have been un a motor tour, have returned to Marton from Rotorua. The many friends of Mrs. A. W. Ful lerton-Smith, Thrybergh, will be sorry to learn that she is in a private hospital at Palmerston North, where. she has undergone an operation on an | eye. She is now making satisfactory progress.
