GANGSTER’S END

MURDERED BY RIVALS. Received July 19, 5.15 u.m. CHICAGO, July 18. Louis “Two Gun’’ Alterie, one of the few surviving among the prominent gansters or the prohibition decade, was assassinated to-day by gunmen hiding iu a building across the street from his home. Since the repeal of the dry laws Alterie has been active in the affairs of a powerful union of theatre janitors, ami it is assumed that rival gangsters killed him in an effort to gain, control of the organisation. It was the daily custom of Mrs. Alterie to drive her husband tu his office, but to-day she delayed a few minutes in the foyer of the apartment building, where she heard a burst of gunfire. Hurrying to the street she found her husband’s crumpled body. He died before he reached hospital, twelve bullets having pierced his body. The police found that a room across the street had been occupied by two men for a fortnight. They were apparently keeping watch for an opportune time to kill their victim. A high powered rifle and a score of discharged shells were found. Both men escaped.
