THE VALPAI CASE
APPEAL TO CONFERENCE. WELLINGTON, July 19. An appeal has been lodged with the New Zealand Racing Conference by Mr. L. Hodgson, the owner of Valpai, against the decision of the Auckland district committee in disqualifying Valpai for the Hobsonville Hurdles, run at Avondale in April, and awarding first prize money to Thespis. No date has yet been fixed for the hearing. The Valpai case has passed through several stages and has occupied a considerable time in hearing. In the race in dispute Valpai was ridden by a gentleman rider, Mr. J. L. Muir, and the owner of Thespis (Mr. G. Hodgson), who ran second, entered a protest on the ground that Mr Muir had infringed the conditions of bis licence by being associated in the training of Valpai. The protest was dismissed. but on the case reaching the District Committee the protest was allowed, Valpai being disqualified for the race, which was awarded to Thespis, with St. Ames second ami The Sun third.
