TURAKINA MAN MISSING
RIDERLESS HORSE FOUND EXTENSIVE POLICE SEARCH MAY HAVE BEEN DROWNED. After conducting a search all day yesterday, Constable Baskin and Detective Allsop returned to Marton last night without having been able to discover the whereabouts of George Hooper, a single man aged 25 y%ars, who was in the employ of Airs. R. AL Baldwin, of Turakina Valley. It is understood that Hooper set out at 7.3< yes’terday morning on horseback to cross the Turakina River, which flows through the property. His horse was later found on one side of the ford, but there was no sign of its rider, it is feared that a drowning accident may have occurred. The young man intended crossing the river at a ford at the back of the homestead. The river was fairly high, r however, and though the ford itself is considered safe there is a hole nearby which may prove dangerous if an nt tempt was made to cross the river further down. Immediately following the news that Hooper was missing a search by the police and residents of Turakina Valley was commenced. With the assistance of Mr. Franke, who loaned his boat, the Alarton police made an extensive search of the river bank, but at dusk had not located the missing man. The search will be continued today. Hooper's parents reside at Palmer st on North. ■
