MAJESTIC CINEMA. .MAE WEST. “Belle of the Nineties, ' which opens to-morrow at the Majestic Theatre, the third of the Mao West starring pictures to come from Paramount, shows the blonde siren again in a setting of the gay ’9o’s, which was the period of her first picture, “She bone Him Wrong.” Surrounded by three screen sweet hearts, Roger Pryor, John Mack Brown and John Miljan, together with Duke Ellington and his orchestra, Katherine de .Milie, Warren Ilymer, and Stuart Holmes, Mae West essays the role of th<- country’s most sensational burlesque queen of the period. As “American Beany,” Mae West becomes involved with an ambitious young prize tighter, Boger Pryor, of St. Louis, but, through the. plotting of the prize lighter’s manager, the romance is broken up and Mae West accepts an opportunity to leave St. Louis to become queen of a popular gambling palace in New Orleans. The men of New Orleans welcome her to the city, and John Mil jau’s gambling house becomes the most popular rendezvous iu town. Miljan decides to back a young prize fighter, Pryor, Mae West’s “St. Louis man,” and, in order to get money for this enterprise, induces Pryor to rob Mae West of her diamonds. Pryor gets the diamonds, unaware of the identity of (the woman he robes. Mae West frames he fight, ruins Miljan. and brings back her remorseful sweetheart. Leo McGarry directed the picture from an original story and screen play written by Mae West, herself. In the course of the story, Miss West sings several songs written for her by Sam Coslow and Arthur Johnston. Dozens of new gowns were designed for this role, all featuring the prevailing fashion of the period, and the settings and incidents of the story are authen tically reproduced. MAORI RUGBY. TAIHAPE v.
