RUGBY FOOTBALL On June 8, Alaugaweka have a bye and would be pleased to entertain any Wanganui senior team on that date. Any team accepting this invitation will be assured of a good time. On Saturday Afangaweka, followed by a number of supporters, journeyed to Afarton and played a game against the Afarton Old Boys’ Club. It was one of the best games played there for some time, and Afangaweka won by 18 points to 14 points. Afarton were the unlucky team on the day for they missed what appeared to be two easy kicks at. goal, and in the second spell at least three fairly brilliant passing movements narrowly missed their objective. Afarton Old Boys play »clean, open football. For Afangaweka the forwards played a very fast game. In fact it would be difficult to distinguish between them, each and every one doing his fair share. Crowther and D. Pot aka are very fit, likewise Billinghurst. AfcNie did a tremendous amount of the hard work, whilst Smith excelled himself. Taiuni, the Rata forward, justified his inclusion in the team. The. back division gave their best exhibition Ito date, and were a treat to watch. Gardener at five-eighths, is certainly an asset to this club and also to the Rangitikei Union. He and Potaka combined well.

Paton played sound football and so did Kitto up to the time that an injury to his knee hindered him somewhat. AficKinnon, at half-back, did better than many expected. He opened the game up very well at times. The Manga we k a full-back did everything that was asked of him. In the second spell Taiuru, who had been playing at centre, received an injury to an eye i which necessitated him leaving the j ground. emergency, the Old Boys’ captain was prepared to allow any footballer on the line to play for Maugaweka—a very sporting offer. O’Dea. in the forwards, also played well and appeared to be in good form. O’Dea is a good club member and has done a lot to help the club at dance functions etc. Mangaweka have yet to realise that emergencies arc just as important in the team as the very best players who take the field. Judging by Saturday’s game, the public are now assured of witnessing some good football this season, and the union can do with that support.
