THE MAYOR’S COMMITTEE FORTY-NINTH MEETING HELD. STATEMENT OK AI'COI'N’TS. Throughout the past tour years, during which the. burden of unemployment has been a heavy one, the Mayor of Wanganui (Mr. N. <■>. Armstrong) has had functioning a live Mayors’ Relief Committee, which has worked quietly and efficiently, doing an immense amount of good among those families ,in the city who have required help. The finances of this body have, been handled by the Town Clerk’s Depart ment, under the personal supervision of the city accountant, Mr. F. .1. Best. The committee held its 49th meeting yesterday, at which a statement of accounts covering the year ended March :;1 last was received. The Mayor (Mr. N. G. Armstrong) presided, and there were also present. Xurse Bartlett, Misses Dexter ami 'Hamilton, Messrs. F. C. Atkinson (secretary), F. Best (treasurer), L. V. Kerby (managing secretary, Wanganui Hospital and Charitable Aid Board), F. E. McGregor (Labour Department's certifying officer), A. E. Halligan, W. Brown, F. Webb-Jones, A. R. Donaldson, and R. D. Smart. Apologies were received from Major Hawkins (Salvation Army), and Messrs. 8. H. Palmer Jones, H. C. Jenkins, and J. Crowley. The following statement of receipts and expenditure to March JI was pre seated:

Club £7 2s, United Relief Committee £S Is .2d £69 2s lOd. Amount received from Unemployment Board to be handed to the Wanganui Unemployment Committee, £44 15s, general fund, £969 6s 9<i. grants from proceeds of art unions, £972. donations £7l 4s 96. interest Post Office Savings Rank £l7 0s 311. Total, £2143 11s 7d. Expenditure. By purchase of garments, materials, etc., £t494 9s lid, boots and shoes, £l4B 13s, sugar, £2 17s 6d, Christmas cheer parcels £39 17s 6d, emergency relief £24 7s 3d, ploughing ground for planting £l3 7s Brl, insurance, cheque books and stationery £2. Amount received from Unemployment Board paid to Wanganui Unemployment Committee, £44 15s, grant to men’s shelter, Wicksteed Place £25, amounts paid on behalf of organisations as under: Maori Relief Committee, £33 13s Id, St. Vincent de Paul Society £2O 19s sd, Sunshine Club, £5 10s, United Relief Committee £3 17s 10d—£64 0s 4d. Unexpended balance of grants: Maori Relief Committee £7 15s 6d Sunshine, Club £1 12s, United Relief Committee £4 3s 4d—£l3 10s 106. Balance carried down £270 12s 7d. Total £2143 11s 76. Allocations Dealt With. The committee proceeded to deal with allocations and accounts, the. latter totalling £328 3s for supplies of garments, blankets, food. etc., which were passed for payment. The Mayor stated that £lOO, art union allocations, had been received since the end of the month, and after the payment of accounts as passed, there would be a credit balance of £42 9s 76.
