Miss Barcroft, an American visitor to New Zealand, recently outlined the steps taken in various cities of California to cultivate the love of music in the younger generation. In addition to the school conductors, a head director travelled from school to school to link up the work so that a definite scheme of development could be followed. “It is interesting to see how racial characteristics are brought out,’’ said Miss Barcroft. “In one of the schools a percentage of the scholars are Russian by descent, and the orchestra has distinguished itself on several occasions by its musical achievements.’’
