OBITUARY

MR. J. R. CORRIGAN. WELL-KNOWN HAWERA RESIDENT. lor many years a prominent farmer in South Taranaki and owner of one of the finest farms in New Zealand, Mr. James R. Corrigan, whose death occurred at Hawera yesterday, was born in 1865 and commenced work at the ago of 10. Some years later he became a breeder of stud stock and imported a pedigree Jersey herd which was held in high regard 'by the farming community. Mr. Corrigan’s farm is situated about two miles from Hawera on the road to Manaia. Mr. Corrigan was actively engaged for many years as chairman of the 1 armors’ Union, He was for some years chairman of the Hawera Co-op. Dairy Co., and served on the Patea Harbour Board. Mr. Corrigan was also chairman of the Eltham Box Co. for some years, chairman of the South Taranaki Winter Show Co., director of the New Zealand Rennet Co. chairman of the West Coast Refrigerating Co., director of the South Taranaki Shipping Co., and also a director of a number of other companies. He was a representative on the Dairy Board from 1926-32. Mr. Corrigan also took a keen interest in the returned soldiers and assisted many of the men of the district on their return from the war. In the early years following the war Mr. Corrigan took a lively part in the discussions on the Dairy Export Control Board, and becoming member of Parliament for Patea in 1922 when as the United candidate lie defeated Mr. E. IDixon (Reform) he was in the Parliament that passed the Dairy Export Control Bill in 1923. He was defeated in the election of 1925 by the present member for Patea (Mr H Dickie). V ' In the prime of life Mr. Corrigan was a bluff, rugged type of man, good hearted and generous, one who in a debate would expect hard knocks and was quick to return them with interest. He had the knack of keeping an audience in good humour, and was a trenchant critic of political opponents. “ A generous supporter of the Wanganui Trotting Club, the late Mr. Corrigan was prominent in. sporting circles, owning and racing a number of gallopers as well as trotters. He invariably raced a fair-sized team at Wanganui meetings. The deceased gentleman had not enjoyed good health in recent years. He leaves a widow, son and daughter to mourn his loss.
