GREAT BUSH FIRE

IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA MUCH DAMAGE DONE ADELAIDE March 11. Fifteen thousand -acres of rich farmland in the Mount Gambier district were swept by one of the most destructi\e bush fires on record. At least two homes were destroyed, and sheep, pigs, and poultry perished by hundreds. Volunteers worked desperately to check the outbreak as it raged towards Mount Gambier on a three to four-mile front. The flames reached within two miles of the town before a change of wind carried them towards rougher country. Drizzling rain eventually assisted the fighters, and the situation is being brought under control. It is estimated that the damage is between £20,000 and £30.000.
