WANGANUI SEAT

LABOUR CANDIDATE CHOSEN YOUTHFUL CITY RESIDENT Mr Joseph Bernard Francis Cotteril! has been chosen by the Wanganui branch of the Labour Party as a candidate to contest the Wanganui seat at the next Parliamentary election, which is likely to be held late in November or early in December. Hig candidature has received the endorsement of the party’s National Executive. Mr Cotterill, who is 29 years of age and a son of Air James Cotterill, one of this district’s early settlers, was born in Wanganui and educated at Queen’s Park School. He has made a close study of history, economics, philosophy and psychology. At present he holds the position of president of the Wanganui branch of the Labour Party and has previously contested a seat on the City Council in the interests of Labour. He is also secretary to the Wanganui branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants.

Rugby football, swimming and rowing claimed his attention in the world of sport. He played for the Pirates senior fifteen for a number of years and represented Wanganui in J 930. His club elected him a vice-president and the confidence Rugby supporters had In him was revealed in his election to the Management Committee of the Wanganui Metropolitan Rugby Union some two years ago. Until recently, Mr Cotterill was a prominent member of the Union Boat Club, both as an active oarsman and as an executive officer. At present he is vice-president of the Wanganui Swimming Centre and the Wanganui East Swimming Club. He is a member of the Management Commit tee of the new Free Ambulance Service established by a special branch of the St. John Ambulance Brigade and the Wanganui Hospital Board, and took a prominent part in the establishment of that service.
