MONTHLY MEETING HELD GENERAL BUSINESS The monthly meeting of the Waitotara County Council was held yesterday, Mr. W. Morrison presiding. There were also present Crs. A, R. Richard son, R. Laird, H. G. Birch, A. G. Golds bury, L. T. Jones, R. Farley, T. Alex an dor and J. Cameron. Messrs. .Bain and Fleming wrote asking to cross Mission Line with a pipe line. Permission was granted subject to the work being carried out to the satisfaction of the engineer. Permission was granted to Mr. DPower to erect an overhead wire above W’aireka K-oad on the understanding that when posts or other material is sent, across by this means he have a man stationed on the road to warn passing traffic. Mr. J. P. Ward wrote requesting the council to apply to the Government to provide him. with an effective means of access. The chairman was appointed to wait on the Public Works Department. and Mr. Ward’s request was added to the list of estimates asked for by the department.

Engineer’s Report. The engineer (Mr. T. Dix) reported as follows: “Auckland—Wellington Highway. The contractor has recently started metalling the section in miles 16 and 17; he has been considerably delayed by slips in the Pakaraka Pit. The contract 'for sealing portions of the highway between Kai Iwi and Waitotara i has been satisfactorily completed; the second seal coat on the section between Bushy Park and Pukerimu June Lions was completed during the past week. The fences damaged during construction work near mile post 16 are now being repaired; willows and scrub have been cut. The roadway was metal patched and graded. A. considerable number of small slips came down during the recent storms; these are being cleared. “Brunswick—Westmerc Riiding.—The second seal coat on the Rapanui Highway has been completed, the intersections of the Francis and Watt Roads and two curves on Livingstone Road also received two seal coats; willows were cut and tables were cleaned and the highway was trimmed and graded. The Heads-Mosstown Springvale-Fran-cis and Blueskin highways, Sewell, Lilybank, Brunswick, Kowhatunui, Tokomaru West, Ngaturi. Campbell and Seafield Roads were graded. One large and several small slips occurred on the Riverbank Road, the road being blocked for a day. Along the Tokomaru East and West Roads several sharp corners were widened, scrub and fern were cut, tables were cleaned and slips were cle’ard; scrub was cut along the Brunswick Road and the Western Line was metal patched. “Waitotara Riding.—The Rangitatau Cast—Watershed Highway, Parao and ( Rangitatau West Road were graded. Surfacemen arc widening portions of the Rangitatau East—Watershed Highway near Rangitatau; considerable wear is noticeable in the metalled surface of the highway; t-he shell grit is not strong enough to withstand the heavy lorries. The Waitotara Valley Highway was blocked for a day with numerous slips; the section near Waitotara suffered most, damage was done to the Mangaone Bridge by floods, loading was restricted to two tons gross weight, until the bridge was repaired. Carriers have been ignoring the loading •iossification and the inspector has been requested to enforce the regulations regarding limit of loads on the highway. “Mosston Riding. The Heads— Mosstown and Springvale Francis Highways, Fox and Peakes Roads, Fitzherbert Avenue and Parsons Street were graded. “Tokomaru Biding. —The Rangitatau l-^t—Watershed Highway is being widened preparatory to metalling beingstarted; scrub was cut and tables were cleaned along the highway. Extensive slips occurred on the Watershed Road; these have been cleared sufficiently to allow vehicles to pass. Tables wore cleaned and slips cleared along the Ahn Ahu and Kauarapaoa Roads. ’ }
