SWEPT BY FIRE
CANTERBURY SHEEP RUN. I Per Pi«»m Aseort&tiOß ] CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 4. On a sheep run oxvned by Mr. J. T. Denton, situated on the plains five miles north west of Southbridge, a fire 10-day swept 300 acres of dry grass and threatened to spread over neighbouring properties nnd an acre of pine plantation on the Oaklcigh Estate. A large army of fire-fighters, with the. aid of tire breaks ami careful back-firing, eventually controlled and extinguished the fire. Mr. Denton had been anxious about the fire risk and his staff hart been burning off with narrow fire breaks. The outbreak began when the fire leapt, across a brear. ixo the dry pasture and quickly spread over a half-mile front.
