DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB the autumn meeting. FIB ST DAY’S HANDICAPS. [ Per Press Association. I DUNEDIN, Feb. 4. WARRINGTON HURDLE HANDICAP. (Of 4150; one mile and a-half).

CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB FOB NEXT SATURDAY. LIST OF HANDICAPS. ( F»r Prwii 1 CHRISTCHURCH. Feb. 3. Handicaps for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on February 9 are: — HORNBY HANDICAP. (Of £125; nine furlongs).

FAREWELL TO COURSE VETERAN FORDELL MENTOR [ FRED TILLEY RETIRES (By ‘■Kestrel”) When Porotiti ran home nearly a length ahead of his nearest opponent m the Campbell Handicap on Saturday, the concluding day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s summer meeting, it marked the success of the fourth favourite during the afternoon. But that was not the feature which accounted for the warmth of the reception accorded Voitre’s mount on it» return to the official enclosure. The occasion was rather unique, for it marked the farewell appearance of the veteran Fordell mentor, Fred Tilley, as a trainer. It was fitting that he should have chosen the scene of so many triumphs for his farewell, and even more fitting was the success which attended Porotiti’s effort. To mark the occasion senior stewards of the Wanganui Jockey Club, Messrs C. G. Russell (vice-president and •chairman). H. M. Speed and Robert Russell, and Mr W. McA. Duncan waited on Mr Tilley to bid him an official farewell. It was an honour well deserved by the veteran, who viewed the racing from his motor-car, having been an invalid for the last couple of years. During his long association with racing in the North Island, a period extending to close on fifty years, Fred Tilley has turned out the winners of over one hundred events on the Wanganui course, and in spite of his disability in recent, months, the 1935 summer meeting at Wanganui found him producing three horses for two wins (Porotiti twice), two seconds (Prevail twice) and one unplaced performance (Plateau in the Wanganui Cup). I Some conception of the high opinion held of Mr Tilley may be gathered from the fact that ho wai, several Years ago, elected a life member of the Wanganui Jockey Club, this honour being conferred on him prior to his departure for England on a holiday tour. Saturday’s little function served further to show appreciation of his standing in the community. Few trainers in New Zealand have been sn honoured in activity or retirement, and none could have been more deserving.

It is a far cry to the first occasion on which Mr Tilley, a native of Christ church, became associated with horses, that being at Riccartox In 1879, whex he was with that well-known rider ot the “good old days,” T. Lyford. Later he was with Sam Higgott and D. Jones, the latter being then trainer for Mr G. G. Steal. It was in 1887 that he came to the North Island, and two years later he went to Melbourne. Those were the days when the mighty Carbine was making history and a £lO.OOO Melbourne Cup was considered well in keeping with the importance of the leading State in Australia. The year 1891 found Tilley bayk at Fordell, and with the exception of the brief period of his absence in England, there he has been ever since. Innumerable Winners From the Fordell stable have been turned, out innumerable winners, a full list of whose names would entail lengthv research, but their num tiers may be judged from the fact that they have won upwards of £200,000 In stakes. When it is considered that the big prizes of the Australian turf have not been aimed at by Fordell candidates, such a feat as winning over £150,000 in stakes in the Dominion is rather unique In the 1887-88 season, Tilley commenced with the winners of two races, who credited him with £4O in stakes. That was only a start, however, and within a decade. Fordell-trained horses were crediting their mentor with fourfigure totals at the end of the season. The best period of all in the 47 years during which Tilley has been training was that embracing the 1922-23 season, for in the twelve months thus covered, Tilley turned out winners of £13,545 in stakes. It is interesting to note the figures for the eleven years from the first season after the war till 1929-30. Here they are as compiled by “Carbine,” of the New Zealand Referee: — 1919-20, £8025; 1920-21, £8345; 192122, £7080; 1922-23, £13,545; 1923-24, £8375; 1924-25, £6100; 1925-26, £8647; 1926-27, £4755 : 1927-28, £7020; 1928-29, £9365; 1929-30, £3345. The greatest number of winners turned out from the stable in one season was 33 in 1903 v 4, but, though there were 15 seconds as well, the stakes totalled only £2,351. How consistently successful Fordell was may be gathered from the following record of winners turned out: 19023, 32; 1903-4, 33; 1904-5, 31; 1905-6, 26; 1906-7, 26; 1907-8, 20; 1911-12, 20; 1912-13, 32; 1913-14, 20; 19.14-15, 28; 1915-16, 20; 1917-18, 21; 1919-20, 26; 1928-29, 26. Enthusiasm Best Having had so many good horses under his charge, Tilley has a great field from which to select the besr horse he has ever trained, and many would venture the opinion that he would award the palm to Lady Lucy, New Zealand Cup winner of 1909, or to Client, winner of two Wanganui Cup races. But the veteran mentor has a soft spot in his heart for Enthusiasm, with which bonny filly he won the New Zealand Derby, Great Northern Derby, Great Northern Oaks and Wellington Cup, as well as having a deadheat with Gold Light in the New Zealand Oaks. Client was hard to beat in soft going but did not relish hard tracks. Lady Lucy turned out as good at the stud, for she gave the turf Oratress, New Zealand Cup winner (trained by Tilley) in 1920, and Oratress in turn was the dam of Oratrix, winner of the New Zealand Cup in 1928. it was with Commotion that Fred Tiilev commenced operations, winning a number of hurdle races, but it was Return (.The Prodigal —Tallagalla) that he had his real start. He has been trainer lur Mr McA. Dunean for some 35 years, while Air T. A. Duncan was also a patron of the stable till a few years agv> when L. G. Morris, who had charge ar Fordell during Tilley’s absence, movvu back to Marton, where Mr T. A. Duncan’s horsey have since been trained. Mr and Mrs Blackmore, of Palmerston North, have generally had one or mure horses in training at Fordell while Mr Russell Grace, a steward of th® Wanganui Jockey Club,

I must regard Tilley’s successes with i View Halloo, Mother Superior, and i others as happy results of the association with Fordell stable. At one time, Tilley had charge of that good performer Amythas, though it was at an early stage in the Demosthenes gelding’s career, the Fordell trainer being given the credit for laying a solid foundation for the many successes achieved by Amythas. Having made his farewell bow to the turf in such happx circumstances, Mr Fred Tilley may look forward to enjoying the honoured ease to which he is entitled AU patrons of the turf, be they owners, fellow-trainers, or mere racegoers, will wish him a happy and contented retirement. TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB THIS WEEK'S CUP MEETING. REHANDICAPS DECLARED. Two of the acceptors for the Taranaki Jockey Club’s autumn meeting wore returned winners at Wanganui on Saturday' and have accordingly been rehandicapped for their first day’s engagements. Wotan has had his weight for the Ngamotu Juvenile Handicap raised from 7.5 to 8.1, while The Ark, originally set to carry 8.1 in the Timaru Hack Handicap, will be required to carry 8.8 if he is started. Wotan will be an absentee on Thursday, for ho was sent back to Trentham by float over the week-end, Vinco being the only one of T. R. George's charges to go on to_New Plymouth. The first event on Thursday is set down to start at J2 noon, and the programme will be got through promptly to time. In this direction the Wanganui Jockey Club maintained a commendably high standard throughout last week’s meeting. Win-and-place betting will be catered for at New Plymouth, and the totalisator barometer which proved so popular with racegoers on the midsummer Taranaki circuit will be once more in operation. W. Rayner will take his team of three through to New Plymouth by float this morning. Pomp (Taranaki Cup) and Rust (Mimi Highwcight) will be ridden by W. J. Broughton, and Burnish (Flying Handicap) will have K. Voitre as pilot. These three of Mr. Currie’s horses are all in good order and should secure some of the stakemoney offering on the trip.
