DUKE AT FIJI
NATIVE FISHING EXCURSION BALL AT GRAND PACIFIC Receis ed Feb. 3, 6.20 p.m. SUVA, Feb. 3. On Saturday tho Duke of Gloucester was taken to the island of Ban, the ancient capital of Fiji, where he was given a Royal Fijian welcome with all the ancient ceremonials, including native dances and feasting, and was taken in Fijian canoes to the reef, where the Fijians, men and women, showed him all their methods of fishing—line, spearing, net. and reed fences. However, the fishing expedition was unsuccessful, but the visiting pressmen described '.he visit as “the best show of the lour. ’ ’ In the afternoon the Duke returned to Suva, and :n the evening attended a Government ball at the Grand Pacific Hotvl. It was a brilliant function, al which 600 guests were present. Tho Duke was escorted from Government House by Fijian troops bearing flaming torches and running alongside the car. This morning he attended church ami afterwards the Duke ami his party left for the island of P»eq;i, 20 miles south of Suva, where a firewalking »ercinony was performed in his honour. He will return to Suva this evening.
