OBITUARY

DR. W. C. SADLIER. FORMER BLSHOP OF NELSON. LONDON, Feb. 1. The death has occurred of Dr. Sadlier, ex-Bishop of Nelson. The Rt. Rev. William Charles Sadlier, M.A.; D.D., Was Bishop of Nelson from 1912 to 1933. He was born near Brandon, County Cork, Ireland, ou May 29, 1567. <uid came out to Australia. After a business lif' extending over four or five years he was accepted as a candidate for Holy Orders, and entered Trinity College, Melbourne, in 1888. He "as ordained in St. Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne, iu 1891, and was appointed to the charge ot the district of Pyramid Hill, where he remained for a year. He became diocesan curate in Bendigo till 1899. He took the B.A. degree, Melbourne University, in 1894, and his M.A. degree in 1896. From 1897 to 1899 he was principal uf I’erry Hall Theological College, and then was appointed to Holy Trinity Church, East Melbourne, in 1991, when only 34 years of age, he was appointed Canon ol St. Paul s Cathedral, Melbourne. In 1904 he paid a visit to England, and on his return to Melbourne he was appointed Vicar of Christ Church, St. Kilda. In 1909 he took his B.D. degree at London University, and at Lambeth in 1918 ho was given his DID. In 1895 he married Miss Hdith Livjjsley, daughter of Mr. William Livesley, a civil servant. There are two sons aud two daughters. Bishop Sadlier served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force abroad in 1918. On the occasion of Bishop Sadlier's retirement iu 1933 the Rev. E. M. i Cowie, as president of the special Synod* read to tho Bishop a resolution which had been moved by the A icarGeneral, conveying to the Bishop the deepest appreciation of the whole diocese for ail his unselfish, faithful, and splendid work for the Church. Special mention was made of 'the building up of the various diocesan funds, the com [illation of diocesan particulars (a work of 12 years’ patient search and entry), the building of the first part of the magnificent cathedral, yet withal the ever-spiritual leadership of the people of the diocese. The \ icarGeneral also referred to Bishop Sadlier’s worthy contribution of service—especially through the New Zealand Board of Missions ami the Church Alissiouarv Society -to the wider life ot the Church of the Province of New Zealand.
